The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Sustainable Winter Coats: 2019

A Round-Up of the Most Stylish (and Conscious) Vegan Winter Outerwear

Well, it’s that time of year again! Winter is coming. And if you are like me, you are also scrambling to hunt down chic vegan coats for the fast-approaching cold weather.

Living in Toronto, Canada means that investing in a warm winter coat is an absolute must for me. However, I’m also a capsule-wardrobe enthusiast. (My advice to anyone is that when spending a lot of money, you’ll want said item to stand the test of time.) Plus, I build my wardrobe to be as cruelty-free (aka vegan) and sustainability-conscious as possible. I’m looking for clothing made with considerably less harm to the environment, other people, and the animals.

Below I’m sharing my top 16 vegan winter coats for women. I’ve hilighted 2 coats per brand, but I encourage you to visit each website and explore for yourself! All the outerwear featured in this article have sustainable aspects to them. But please note: some companies manufacture in places like Canada or Italy, while others manufacture in lightly-regulated Chinese factories. I’ll make note of companies that have exceptional manufacturing ethics by calling out the country it was assembled in.

After its debut at Alltrueist, I can’t stop thinking about the outerwear from this Montreal-based brand. Monkland Village offers various classic coat styles and colours. Be sure to read about Kapok, their innovative and sustainable plant-fibre insulation! I also love that Monkland Village coats are designed and made here in Canada.
For even more chic vegan brands, browse Alltrueist’s online shop. They have great shipping options for those in the US and Canada.

Ethically Made Vegan Winter Coats by Wuxly

This is the second high-endurance Canadian outerwear brand on this list. (Way to go Canada!) And I can personally vouch for how shockingly-warm Wuxly coats are. I’ve tried them on in person several times. If you are looking for serious winter protection, you need to check out this brand. They are like Canada Goose, except, you know… ethical, responsible and vegan.

Vegan Wool Winter Coats by Matt & Natt

I’m rounding out my list of vegan winter coats with a fourth Canadian brand. (Let’s be honest, Canadians know how to deal with the cold.)
Note that I don’t catalogize Matt & Natt as “very sustainable,” though they incorporate thoughtful touches like recycled polyester etc. However, I know many of you are looking for wool-alternative coats. There’s no denying the vegan-wool coats Matt & Nat released this year look super chic! Having said that, I’d love to see this brand push their manufacturing practices to be more thoughtful towards the environment and to those who manufacture their goods. Overall, I’m happy to see this Canadian brand expanding into outerwear.

EVIE Vegan Coat – vegan wool, available in 2 colours.

CLARESA Vegan Coat – vegan wool.
