Psst: This List Is Also a Handy Packing Guide
Hello, modern mamas! Forget falling into fleeting trends. It’s time to invest in quality items that make you feel fabulous, look fantastic, and don’t compromise your ability to keep up with your little ones. This guide will help you curate a capsule wardrobe that’s stylish, functional, and ready for anything that mom life throws at you.
Basic Wardrobe Staples
Let’s start with the basics. These items form the foundation of your wardrobe, so quality and comfort are paramount.
Jeans
A good pair of jeans is a must-have. Opt for a timeless style that flatters your unique body shape. French women often choose cropped kick-flares or high-waisted jeans with slightly wide legs. Both styles are chic, comfortable, and versatile.
Joggers
A pair of durable joggers won’t stretch out or get holes from regular kid-related activities. Plus, they’re perfect for those days when you’re running errands or playing in the park.
Athletic Leggings
One to two pairs of athletic leggings with some compression can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re in your first year postpartum. The denser fabric and compression can provide comfort and support. And if they have pockets, even better!
Cotton Shirts
Three to four high-quality cotton shirts are essential. Whether you prefer crewneck t-shirts, V-necks, or tanks, go for something that you’ll feel comfortable in daily.
Cardigan
A slightly oversized cardigan instantly elevates even a casual t-shirt and joggers look. It’s also great for days with varying temperatures.
Fancy Top
One fancy or nicer top that pairs well with jeans is perfect for those days or evenings when you want to dress up a bit.
Stress-Free Accessories
Accessories can add a pop of personality to your outfits. Here are a few stress-free accessories that are chic and practical.
Tote Bag (or Backpack)
A cute and durable tote bag (or backpack!) is essential. It should be big enough to fit your everyday essentials plus kid-emergency stuff like wipes, snacks, sunscreen, or a portable charger.
Camera Bag
If you didn’t value being hands-free before, you certainly will after becoming a mom. I own several camera bags because they are the Goldilocks of crossbody bags: not too small; not too large. My newest camera bag is by Stella McCartney, which I found secondhand on Vestiaire Collective. Though I also love and regularly use the half-crescent shaped ones by Alexandra K.
Jewelry
Durable, 24/7 wearable, waterproof, life-proof jewelry is a must. Delicate gold hoops or a dainty chain necklace are both great options. Just make sure they won’t tarnish or cause skin irritation. Currently I’ve been loving the brand Ana Luisa for their easy-wearing, life-proof, water-proof, nickel-free jewelry.
Hat
A cute hat is a savior for those unwashed hair days. Whether it’s a toque, baseball cap, or sunhat, pick something that suits your style and your weather.
Classic Outerwear and Shoes
Last but not least, let’s talk about outerwear and shoes.
Trench Coat
A classic trench coat is perfect for in-between weather. It never goes out of style and is versatile enough to pair with almost anything.
Sneakers
Quality sneakers are a must. Opt for a minimalist, classic design in a neutral color for maximum versatility. I’m a VEJA gal myself and highly recommend them for quality, style, and ethical production.
Flat Shoes
Two pairs of flat shoes are essential. One can be casual, like a ballet flat or loafer, while the other can be slightly more elevated. Remember, you don’t want the inconvenience of trying to run or carry a massive diaper bag in high heels. Rothy’s are my go-tos but I also like the metallic ones by VEERAH for something stylish and practical.
There you have it, mamas! A chic and functional capsule wardrobe for spring and summer. Remember, invest in quality items, choose pieces that make you feel good, and don’t sacrifice mobility for style. After all, style is about expressing your unique self, but it also needs to adapt to your lifestyle needs.
Until next time.
