The Perfect Sustainable Turtleneck That You’ll Wear Forever
Eileen Fisher may not have the sexy media campaigns of other sustainable fashion brands that I love (hellllooo Reformation and Stella McCartney!)…
But what Eileen Fisher may lack in media presence, she makes up for, in heaps, with industry clout. She was one of the first American sustainable fashion entrepreneurs and started her fashion career decades ago. By eschewing trends and using top-notch craftsmanship, each piece is made to last.
The Timeless Turtleneck
This sleek black turtleneck is my third piece from Eileen Fisher. It’s made from a slinky Tencel Jersey that skims across the skin, like a cotton-bamboo-silk hybrid. It’s super soft, stretchy, and odor resistant (!) This may be TMI, but I can wear this top three to four times before it needs to be washed—which is not the case for the vast majority of tops I own. It’s also super breathable.
If you travel for business, you need this top. It packs superbly, wears comfortably in various weather conditions, and has a streamlined fit making it the perfect partner for blazers.
How I Style this Thin Black Turtleneck from Eileen Fisher
Because it’s made from a thin fabric, it is perfect for layering or tucking into pants or skirts. However, don’t let its light weigh decide you! It’s still warm on chilly days, but not in the overbearing way that wool or cashmere is. Think of it as a cross between a long-sleeved shirt and a thin sweater, but uber-chic.
Black turtlenecks can be paired with so many things in your closet! Dark or black denim, high waisted skirts, or layered under dresses. I’ve worn it in all of the above ways. It’s the perfect piece to add to your collection if you’re looking to get winter millage out of your summer dresses.

Because black provides the perfect backdrop for just about anything, accessorizing is really up to you! I personally love how chunky gold accessories look with this top, but layers of delicate chains or a single abstract statement piece, like a wrist cuff or bold earrings, work great as well. A vintage scarf tied around the neck or your hair makes a defined Je ne sais quoi vibe if you’re feeling artsy. Or, pair with large, dark sunglasses and I promise, you will instantly feel invincible.
The Ethical Black Tote
Just like how every wardrobe needs a L.B.T. (little black turtleneck), a sturdy black tote will never let you down. This one is from a wonderful African wildlife preservation company called TheOne08. The brand is based here in Toronto, but their mission is to support natural habitats and endangered animals in Kenya via their partnership with the Il Ngwesi wildlife conservancy.
Shop the ‘Forever’ Tencel Jersey Turtleneck from Eileen Fisher
One last reason to love the Eileen Fisher brand is its size-inclusiveness. In addition to standard sizing, they also offer Petites and Plus sizes. While I often shop the Petites collection (I’m 5’2), the XXS in this turtleneck fits me perfectly! The sleeves aren’t too long and the cut hits me right at the top of my hipbone, allowing me to do a mini-tuck or leave it flowing.
Please note: Eileen Fisher’s cuts are generous. In tops, I’m typically a Small or Medium, but I buy XS or XXS in Eileen. In bottoms, I tend to buy Medium, sometimes Small, but in Eileen, I’ve purchased XS. Make sure you check the fit chart on each piece before deciding which size to order.
The Eileen Fisher Jersey Turtleneck top is still available in standard sizing from XXS – XL. Not available in your size? Fellow short gals, you can browse the Petites sweater and cardigan section. And of course, Plus sizes have a dedicated section for sweaters and cardigans too!
