Bleusalt Review: The Softest Sustainable Fabric, Made in the USA

My Favourites from Bleusalt

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the California-based, sustainable fashion brand Bleusalt. I’ve mentioned their basics multiple times, including my Sustainable & Cozy Vegan Winter Fashion video. I’ve been wearing their bralettes under many breezy button-downs and plunging sundresses for years. And the turtleneck I purchased last winter was worn constantly–you probably noticed over on Instagram and here on The Purist Life. At this point, I have six Bleusalt pieces in my wardrobe! Below I’m sharing what I love about this California brand and reviewing some of the pieces that I wear the most.

Also noteworthy: these photos are from my first official pregnancy shoot! Dusan took these au naturel photos of me early one morning on Coronado Island, California. We were staying at The Loews on the more isolated end of the island. You can find everything that I packed for this trip on my Sustainable Autumn Packing List: 1 Week in San Diego (While Pregnant!) guide.

About Bleusalt

Bluesalt pieces are perfect for travel and casual wear, as they don’t crease and are breathable. I’ve worn Bleusalt in many climates: from scorching summers in Cuba to frigid winters in Canada. Although the designs are minimalist, they have a beautiful movement and drape to them due to their signature fabric. And because Bleusalt specializes in classic designs, their pieces are highly versatile and will be wardrobe staples for years.

About Bleusalt’s Signature Sustainable Beechwood Fabric

Bleusalt creates its luxurious, flattering basics with a sustainable woven fabric made from beechwood tree fibres. The fabric’s weave is a little open, meaning air passes through freely, and it has a luxurious, quality drape.

From the outside, Bleusalt’s beechwood fabric looks like a plush cotton and cashmere hybrid. The inside of the fabric has a fluffy, wild-cotton texture. This soft side of the fabric holds heat against the skin, yet won’t make you overheat. This will shed a little bit during the first few wears. Wash the garment inside-out on a gentle cycled if you’d like to get rid of the fluffy bits before wearing it.

The Bleusalt Turtleneck

This is a very chic, very cozy, addition to any wardrobe. This is the perfect ethical and vegan alternative to a cashmere sweater! There is generous fabric at the neck, so you can fold, roll, or drape the “turtleneck” portion however you’d like. Both the ends of the sleeves and the end of the torso have slits, which allow them to sit in a very flattering way.

This turtleneck is highly breathable, soft as a bunny, and shockingly cool on the skin. That’s due to Bleusalt’s iconic Beechwood fibre fabric. As someone who overheats easily, I love this turtleneck top! Even though I received this top in the middle of July, I still wore it around the house and out to run errands. (People did ask why I was wearing a turtleneck in Summer…)

I purchased mine in white, size 1. Typically, I’m a Small/size 4 in US dresses and tops. The size 1 fits perfectly across my shoulders, though I will point out I don’t have broad shoulders. The body of the top is a little fitted across the chest, and flows away from the body around the stomach, and is a little fitted across my hips. I’m petite in height (5’2″), so it’s normal for long tops to reach all the way past my hips. You’ll notice that the sleeves also reach my knuckles, which I don’t mind, but taller people won’t have that issue. Strangely, even though these photos were taken in my second trimester, I didn’t feel tight or restricted at all!

Overall I would rate this a 9/10. The fit, appearance, and comfort of the Bleusalt Turtleneck are top-notch! I subtracted one point because I wish the ends of the sleeves were finished in a more polished way–but this is probably again due to me being petite and the sleeves being long on me.

The Bleusalt 2 Yard Wrap

The 2 or 3 Yard wrap is a lovely addition to any wardrobe. I purchased the 2 Yard wrap, again due to my height. But if you are taller than me, you may want to splurge on the 3 Yard wrap for more fabric length. I’ve already spoken in length about why scarves are a powerhouse staple in any minimalist’s wardrobe. Bleusalt’s version of a scarf is an elegant investment that should see you through multiple seasons and situations.

Overall, I would rate their Scarf Yard wrap a 10/10. This is a super versatile piece and I can see why it’s a bestseller for the brand.

The Bleusalt Swing Top

I hadn’t seriously considered this top until I became pregnant. But I’m so glad that I have this in my wardrobe now! It offers all the comfort of a baggy workout top while having the chic look of an expensive minimalist top. I’ve been pairing mine with workout shorts, leggings, and sweatpants since my belly is too large for anything else at this point. And this top somehow manages to make me feel like I’m put together! Once my body returns to somewhat normal, I plan to pair this top with fitted jeans or tucked into high-rise shorts.

I purchased the Swing top in size 1, and this fits my shoulders and upper body great. I could have maybe gone for a size 0 for a more fitted look, but the design is meant to be a bit lose. Hence the name “swing” top. Overall, I would the Swing Top 9/10. I subtracted 1 point because I noticed that the thread finishing wasn’t as clean as I would have expected on some edges. This is easily solved by carefully snipping away excess thread.

The Long Sleeve Crewneck Dress

I’m the sort of gal who frequently wears sweater-like knit dresses all through the autumn and winter. Mainly because they are so comfortable and ridiculously easy to style. They’re basically a finished outfit, just add shoes! When Bleusalt launched their form-skimming maxi-dresses, I was obsessed. If you like a one-and-done piece, this may become your newest closet cornerstone.

Honourable Mention: The Bralette

I think it’s fair to say that some people would love the Bleusalt Bralette and others would find it doesn’t offer enough support. Because I’m smaller-chested, I don’t really need a lot of support. And on hot, humid days, I love layering these super soft, breathable bralettes under sundresses or gauzy button-downs. However, I would love to see them add some removable padding. The material is too clingy to be worn alone and I don’t need the world seeing those details! Despite wearing these bralettes constantly, I would rate them a 7/10 until some improvements are made to the design so that they are more universally wearable.
