Perhaps the following thought has bubbled up in the shower: “My shampoo sure smells nice, but what the heck are Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Polysorbate-20, and Dimethicone…?”
The phrase “I have no idea what this is made of.” might resonate with you. Perhaps you’ve flipped over your favourite foundation, face cream, or primer, and asked yourself “Why am I am rubbing this into my face when the ingredient list is nothing but a bunch of chemicals?” If so, The Purist Life is for you!
Have you ever wondered why so many beauty companies rely on artificial fragrances? The answer to that question is quite long. But in short, it’s cheaper. And that means more profit for them. In fact, “artificial fragrance” is a general label that anything can be tossed into, without having to disclose the formula. Much like a black hole: it’s accounted for, but we don’t know what’s inside of it.
Sounds kind’a bad, right? That’s because it is. Manufactures have almost zero accountability for what their products do to your body over time. If you can’t take them to court with definitive evidence, then they will never change their ways. Unless… they start losing profit.
I’ll be the first to admit that I like nice things. But working in the fashion industry gave me several eye-opening experiences. After transitioning into marketing and branding, I saw even more horrors. I packed up pretty lies and shipped them behind shiny facades to eager buyers. For a while, I even drank the Kool-Aid myself. Life was good. Things are always easier if you just smile, and sip, and don’t ask questions.
But it never felt right. Deep down, I knew better. And I would push those thoughts aside in favour of “fitting in” and owning… things. Long story short: I was being a hypocrite.
I’m proud to say that’s not me anymore. I couldn’t care less if it has an interlocking double-C logo on it. Or if the latest “It-Girl” was snapped wearing it. The lifestyle that’s right for me is one free from harmful toxins, human exploitation, and animal cruelty. If a brand doesn’t fit with your standards, take your money elsewhere. The language of business is money. If you want to send a message to brands, stop buying from them and start looking at companies that actually care: Care about you, human rights, animal rights, and the planet.
And now for the best part: you can have it all! Dedicating to a conscious, non-toxic lifestyle does not mean foregoing lust-worthy, effective beauty products. And buying vegan, sustainable fashion does not mean compromising on style or quality. You just have to know where to look! Hint: Check out the Wardrobe or Beauty posts here on The Purist Life.
After years of personal research, trial-and-error, and kicking myself for not ever writing things down; I’ve realized it was time for a change. The Purist Life is my humble record of what I’ve learned along the way. And I want to share it all with you.
My name is Natalie Milakara. I’ve been vegetarian, by choice, since I was quite small. In 2017, with the encouragement of my partner, I decided that I was ready to pursue a fully vegan lifestyle. When I’m not deep-diving into the green beauty or sustainable fashion, I’m working fulltime for a tech company. (Yes—Underneath all this glamour, I’m actually a massive nerd! 💁 ) You can also find me on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok , and Pinterest
